Meal Delivery Data Study 2026: What 7,750 Dishes Reveal About Protein, Calories, and Cost
A MealFan original data study · Published August 2026 · Updated August 10, 2026 · By Eric Sornoso · Based on 7,750 dishes independently cataloged across 29 meal delivery services.
What we measured
MealFan catalogs the full menu of every meal delivery service we review, recording protein, calories, carbohydrates, fat, and per-serving price for each dish. This study analyzes 7,750 dishes across 29 brands — the largest independent nutrition-and-price dataset of its kind. Prices are from our 2026 pricing audit; nutrition is from each brand's published menu data. Not every brand publishes every nutrient: sodium figures below are based on the 2,707 dishes that list sodium, and fiber figures on 2,606 dishes. Carbohydrate figures use total carbs as published, not net carbs.
Finding 1: The median meal-delivery dish is high-protein
| Metric | Median | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Protein | 36 g | 70% of dishes have 30 g+, 40% have 40 g+, 13% under 20 g |
| Calories | 680 | 22% under 500 cal, 31% over 800 cal (range 10-1,880) |
| Carbohydrates | 57 g | — |
| Fat | 33 g | — |
At a 36 g median, the typical meal-delivery dish meets or beats the ~30 g of protein nutritionists recommend per meal. That makes meal delivery a surprisingly efficient protein source — a point especially relevant for GLP-1 users and athletes, for whom protein density matters more than sticker price.
Finding 2: Protein per dollar varies more than 7x by brand
Combining each brand's median protein with its real per-serving price yields cost per gram of protein — the truest value metric. EveryPlate and Dinnerly (budget meal kits) deliver protein cheapest; plant-forward brands like Daily Harvest cost the most per gram because their dishes average far less protein.
| Service | Median protein / meal | Typical $/serving | Cost per gram protein |
|---|---|---|---|
| EveryPlate | 37 g | ~$5.79 | $0.16 |
| Dinnerly | 39 g | ~$6.99 | $0.18 |
| HelloFresh | 40 g | ~$11.24 | $0.28 |
| Green Chef | 41 g | ~$12.49 | $0.31 |
| Marley Spoon | 36 g | ~$10.99 | $0.31 |
| CookUnity | 37 g | ~$11.54 | $0.31 |
| Home Chef | 34 g | ~$11.45 | $0.34 |
| Sun Basket | 32 g | ~$11.49 | $0.36 |
| Factor | 32 g | ~$12.74 | $0.40 |
| Trifecta | 30 g | ~$14.75 | $0.49 |
| Purple Carrot | 20 g | ~$12.50 | $0.63 |
| Daily Harvest | 8 g | ~$9.49 | $1.19 |
Finding 3: Portions run large
Nearly a third of dishes (31%) exceed 800 calories, and the single largest dish in the dataset hits 1,880 calories. Meal delivery solves the protein problem but not the portion problem — calorie-conscious eaters should filter by calories, not assume "one meal = one serving."
Finding 4: The macro split leans fat
Protein gets the marketing, but fat carries more of the plate. The median dish lists 57 g of carbohydrates and 33 g of fat alongside its 36 g of protein. A dish with exactly those median values gets roughly 22% of its calories from protein, 34% from carbs, and 44% from fat. If you are tracking macros, check the fat line first; it is where meal delivery calories quietly accumulate.
Finding 5: Sodium is the quiet problem
Among the 2,707 dishes that publish sodium, the median is 830 mg, about a third of the 2,300 mg daily value. But the tail is heavy: 38% of dishes exceed 1,000 mg, 19% exceed 1,500 mg, and 3.5% blow through the entire daily limit in a single meal. The saltiest dish we cataloged, a creamy chicken sausage and tortelloni soup from HelloFresh, carries 3,880 mg, which is 169% of a full day of sodium in one serving.
| Sodium per dish | Share of dishes |
|---|---|
| Over 1,000 mg | 38% |
| Over 1,500 mg | 19% |
| Over 2,300 mg (a full day) | 3.5% |
Finding 6: Fiber is the real gap
Meal delivery solved protein and forgot fiber. Among the 2,606 dishes that publish it, the median is just 6 g, against a daily target of 25 to 38 g. A third of dishes (33%) have under 5 g, and only 27% reach 8 g or more. Eating three delivered meals a day at the median gets you 18 g, well short of the 25 to 38 g target. A side of vegetables or beans is not optional with these menus.
Finding 7: The keto reality check
Low-carb marketing outruns the menus. Only 8% of all 6,578 carb-listed dishes come in under 20 g of total carbs, and 17% under 30 g. At the other end, 8% of dishes carry 100 g of carbs or more. If you eat keto, the honest play is a service with a dedicated low-carb line rather than filtering a general menu.
One meal, one day
Put the findings together and this is the trade in a single picture. The median dish delivers 72% of a full day of protein in one sitting, but it also carries 42% of a day of fat and 36% of a day of sodium, while covering just 21% of the fiber you need. Meal delivery is protein rich, salt heavy, and fiber light. Plan the rest of the day around that.

Menus change weekly, so counts drift. Per serving prices are covered separately in the protein per dollar section, which uses our 2026 pricing audit rather than per dish listings.
Limitations
Every honest dataset has edges. Ours: nutrition comes from each brand's published menu data, which we catalog but cannot independently lab test. Not every brand publishes every nutrient, so sodium findings rest on 2,707 dishes and fiber on 2,606. Carbohydrate figures are total carbs as published, not net carbs. Menus rotate weekly, so this is a point in time picture, not a permanent ranking. And dish level prices are not published by most meal kits, so protein per dollar uses our own 2026 pricing audit of standard plans. Finally, sugar, saturated fat, and cholesterol are missing from this study because the industry barely publishes them: of 7,750 dishes, only Factor publishes sugar (436 dishes, median 8 g) and cholesterol, and no major service publishes saturated fat in its menu data. We will add those the moment enough brands disclose them.

Frequently asked questions
Which meal delivery has the most protein per dollar?
EveryPlate, at about $0.16 per gram of protein, followed by Dinnerly at $0.18. Both are budget meal kits with 37-39 g protein per serving at under $7 per serving.
What is the average protein in a meal delivery dish?
The median is 36 grams across 7,750 dishes. 40% of dishes exceed 40 grams of protein.
How many calories are in a typical meal delivery meal?
The median is 680 calories, but portions vary widely — 31% of dishes exceed 800 calories and the largest reaches 1,880.
Is meal delivery high in sodium?
Often, yes. Among 2,707 dishes that publish sodium, the median is 830 mg, but 38% exceed 1,000 mg per serving and 3.5% exceed the full 2,300 mg daily value in one meal. Check the sodium line if you are watching blood pressure.
Does meal delivery have enough fiber?
Usually not. The median dish has 6 g of fiber against a 25 to 38 g daily target, and a third of dishes have under 5 g. Plan to add vegetables, beans, or whole grains on the side.
