The catch

Sodium is the real tradeoff at 420mg per half cup, about 18 percent of the daily limit, and a full plate of pasta usually uses more than half a cup. (source)

The honest take

This is about as clean as a jarred red sauce gets. The ingredient list is short and real (Italian whole peeled tomatoes, olive oil, onions, salt, garlic, basil, black pepper, oregano) with olive oil instead of the soybean or canola oil most supermarket sauces lean on, and the 4g of sugar per half cup comes entirely from the tomatoes with nothing added. Where it loses points is sodium, at 420mg per half cup, which is 18 percent of a day in a portion most people exceed. A health minded shopper reaches for this to skip added sugar and seed oils, then keeps an eye on how much they pour.

What buyers say

Eric Sornoso, FounderAug 11, 2026
Rao's Homemade is the jarred marinara I buy when I do not have time to make my own. Real tomatoes and olive oil, no added sugar, and it tastes closer to a Sunday sauce than anything in the aisle. It is premium priced, and for the ingredient list I happily pay it.
