The catch

Sodium is 200 milligrams per half cup serving, and since a can holds about 3.5 servings you can add roughly 700 milligrams of sodium if you use the whole thing. (source)

The honest take

This is about as clean as a canned tomato gets. A half cup runs 30 calories with 6 grams of carbs and only 3 grams of sugar, all of it naturally from the tomatoes with no added sugar. The ingredient list is short and honest, just diced tomatoes, tomato juice, and under 2 percent salt, citric acid, and calcium chloride, so there are no seed oils, sweeteners, or gums to worry about. The one thing a health minded shopper should watch is sodium, since the standard can carries 200 milligrams per serving and most of us use the whole can.
