The catch

All 16g of sugar comes naturally from dates so there is no added sugar, but that is still a lot of sugar in a 200 calorie bar with only 4g of protein to balance it. (source)

The honest take

This is one of the simplest bars on the shelf, just dates, almonds, cashews, and lemon, six whole ingredients with zero added sugar and nothing artificial. The catch is that dates are naturally very sweet, so a single 45g bar carries 16g of sugar and only 4g of protein, which makes it eat more like a fruit snack than a filling one. If you want a clean, portable pick me up made from recognizable food, it delivers, but do not mistake it for a low sugar or high protein bar.

Larabar is the bar I trust most when I read the label, usually just dates, nuts and fruit. Nothing artificial, no protein isolates, no sugar alcohols. It eats sticky and sweet from the dates, which is the honest tradeoff, but for a real whole-food snack it is hard to beat.
