The catch

The 5g of sugar is all from fruit with zero added sugar, but the 1/4 cup (35g) serving is small, so a normal bowl runs to more like 280 calories and 46g of carbs. (source)

The honest take

This is about as clean as a boxed cereal gets. A 1/4 cup (35g) serving brings 140 calories, 4g fiber, 4g protein, zero added sugar and zero sodium, with the 5g of sugar coming entirely from the dates and raisins mixed in with the whole grain wheat, rye, barley, oats, seeds and nuts. Health minded shoppers reach for it because there is nothing to apologize for on the label, though it is unsweetened and untoasted so it eats plain and needs soaking or milk and toppings to feel like a real breakfast. The one small ingredient wrinkle is that the raisins carry a trace of sunflower oil, which is the only refined oil in the mix.
