The catch

Whole flaxseed passes through you largely intact, so you get little of the 3,100mg of omega 3 or the lignans unless you grind the seeds first, and ground flax meal usually costs about the same. (source)

The honest take

This is about as clean as a pantry staple gets, a single ingredient with nothing added and nothing removed, giving you 8 grams of fiber and 11 grams of mostly plant omega 3 fat in a 3 tablespoon serving. It carries just 10 milligrams of sodium and 0 grams of sugar, so a health minded shopper reaching for cheap fiber and healthy fat has very little to complain about on the label. The catch is the form, not the food, because whole seeds are the version most people should not reach for.
